| About Progression

Funded by Arts Council England, Progression is GLYPT’s programme of training and performance opportunities for creative young people aged 16 -25, and development support for emerging and early career artists.

CREATIVE YOUNG PEOPLE…

The programme provides the opportunity for young people (aged 16 to 29) to engage directly with leading arts practitioners, opening up insight and understanding into progression routes into the creative industries.

Young people can sign up to progression and receive regular updates about upcoming projects. All of these are free, and most are open to anyone (some projects include a selection process). Progression runs in seasons of three months (three times per year), and each season is themed around particular art-forms, skills, content and/or ideas.

Projects and opportunities include:

  • MASTERCLASSES: A series of workshops with professional artists and companies. These are free to attend and provide vital skills and experience across a range of art forms and roles – from acting, devising and directing, to tech, producing and project management. Past masterclass artists have included Greg Wohead, Angela Clerkin, Levantes Dance Theatre and Deaf & Hearing Ensemble.
  • EVENTS / PLATFORMS: Industry events and mini-festivals featuring live performances, panel discussions, workshops and networking. This has included: a two day mini-festival at Theatre Delicatessen, headlined by Selina Thompson and broadcast live online.
  • PROJECTS: Longer engagements with professional artists / companies, often leading to public performances at our Events / Platforms or festivals and events at other venues. This has included ‘Kapow!’ with The Mostly Everything People (performed at our Theatre Delicatessen event) and solo performances with Drunken Chorus (performed at Camden People’s Theatre and Tristan Bates).
  • PROGRESSION APPRENTICE COMPANY: Our apprentice company enables young performers, producers and creatives to produce outstanding new work, in a supportive environment that bridges the gap between training and the profession. Young actors and assistant creatives (assistant director, producer, designer, stage manager) work alongside a professional creative team on a professional quality performance. Our first Apprentice Company project is Jump Out Of Skin, which will be performed for a full week as part of the Autumn season at The Pleasance in North London, October 2017.
  • YOUNG CREATIVE BOARD: A chance for Progression members to shape the programming and strategic direction of the Progression programme. We meet every two to three months (with snacks!) to discuss recent projects, look ahead to what’s coming up and talk about ideas.
  • THEATRE TRIPS: Regular free performances for Progression members. Recently these have included Life of Galileo at the Young Vic, No’s Knife at the Old Vic and Give Me Your Love at the Albany.
  • ACCESSIBILITY: We are working hard to make our projects and events accessible to all. This includes wheelchair accessibility across as much of the programme as possible, and integrated provision for deaf audiences and artists.
  • SHADOWING artists and professionals.
  • OBSERVING rehearsals & discussing creative processes.
  • LEARNING about routes into a career in the arts: how to become a performer, producer, designer, fundraiser, director; how to work in creative learning; or even run your own company.

Being a part of Progression has been such an exciting and fulfilling experience. From attending Masterclasses to then working with a professional director on a GLYPT Progression production. I now have the privilege of being apart of a professional paid T.I.E tour. GLYPT has provided me with such unforgettable opportunities and experiences and has given me a jump-start to my career as a young actress. EMERGING / EARLY CAREER ARTISTS

We support professional artists and companies through residencies, space and opportunities to engage with young artists and audiences, opening up new approaches to working with these groups. We also offer performance opportunities for work-in-progress and finished pieces at a range of events, platforms and festivals. We offer up to three residencies per season, with additional artist bursaries on offer on some occasions. Residencies are advertised here on the Progression website, and via the mailing list.

We can also provide bespoke mentoring support: ranging from dramaturgy to tech / production; from producing / arts management to developing education packages alongside your work.
